DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THIS COURSE \nDialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is designed to help people with multiple disorders learn to effectively cope with painful emotions and increase behavioural control. This course will introduce you to the DBT model\, its fundamental principles and core treatment strategies. Treating clients with multiple problems can be difficult and you’ll learn to keep your clients positively engaged and working toward their long-term goals. Through lectures\, multimedia\, role-play and discussion\, you’ll emerge better equipped in your clinical work to effectively and compassionately respond to your clients. \n\nWHAT YOU’LL LEARN \n\n\nExplain the biosocial theory behind Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT).\nStructure treatment according to level of severity and prioritize treatment targets.\nEnhance motivation and commitment to treatment goals.\nIdentify different ways of expressing validation.\nCoach clients through obstacles that arise during treatment.\n\n\nSCHEDULE \nThis class meets weekly on Mondays from 6:30pm – 8:30pm online from September 13 – October 4\, 2021. \n\nRECOMMENDATIONS \nRegistrants require foundational concepts of mental health through professional training in disciplines such as nursing\, psychiatry\, psychology or social work. \n\nHOW TO REGISTER \nPlease visit the University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies course page to enroll: HERE \n  \n\nINSTRUCTOR \n \nDr. Shelley McMain\, C.Psych.\nClinical Psychologist \nDr. Shelley McMain is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto\, Canada. She is Head of the Borderline Personality Disorder Clinic and a Clinician Scientist at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto. She is a practicing psychotherapist\, trainer\, educator and researcher. Shelley is a certified DBT individual and group therapist and currently serves on the International DBT Strategic Planning Committee. \n  \n  \n\n  \nABOUT THE CERTIFICATE \nThis course can be applied towards the Dialectical Behavior Therapy Certificate. The Certificate in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a specialized training program on an essential therapeutic practice. It is designed for those wanting to learn DBT at an intensive level\, and those who wish to better implement the treatment model in their profession. \nDBT is comprised of four independent yet interconnected modes of intervention: \n\nIndividual therapy\nSkills training (group)\nCoaching\nConsultation team\n\nThis Certificate Program helps you understand DBT’s theory and the application of each of these modes of intervention. Through rigorous content\, applied training\, exercises\, discussions\, role-playing\, activities\, and other multimedia you will learn from field leading practitioners on how to effectively utilize this powerful tool. \n  \nCERTIFICATE REQUIREMENTS \nThere are five required courses in this certificate program. You have four years from the start date of your first course to complete the certificate. To complete the program\, you must complete the first two foundational courses (3648 DBT: The Basics (Foundational Training Part 1) and 3649 DBT: Beyond The Basics (Foundational Training Part 2) in sequence. Afterward\, you may complete the remaining three courses (3650 DBT: Individual Therapy\, 3651 DBT: Skills Training\, and 3652 DBT: Consultation Team) in any order you choose. Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) may be granted for a maximum of two courses. \n\nUpon completion of this certificate program\, your training in DBT will have been comprehensive and you will be ready to practice and improve your clinical skills. However\, you will not be designated as a “Certified DBT Therapist”. The only approved DBT certification is through the DBT-Linehan Board of Certification. Dr. McMain has obtained this certification. This five-module DBT Certificate Program helps prepare you for the certification examination. Clinical supervision is also essential to supporting your effective implementation of DBT.
